Clark Wesley Boyer, Jr., 79, of Darnestown, MD, passed away Sunday, February 2, 2025 after a long and courageous battle with prostate cancer.  Clark, affectingly known as Sonny, was the son of Clark Wesley Boyer, Sr. and Virginia Roberts Boyer who both predeceased him.  Sonny grew up on his father’s dairy farm in Darnestown, graduated from Gaithersburg High School in 1963 and attended West Virginia University.  He worked briefly for his uncle, William Ward, as an electrician’s helper and the remainder of his long career was spent with the C&P Telephone Company and the Bell affiliates.

Sonny particularly loved riding his motorcycle and had treasured memories of his cross-country trip with is son James.  He was a private pilot and kept a single engine airplane on his father’s farm for a number of years.  He also enjoyed hunting and fishing.  Sonny loved people and was friends with everyone he met.  He was a fantastic story teller and loved conversing with his friends.

Sonny is survived by his wife, Diane (Bodmer) Boyer of 53 years, his son James Wesley Boyer of Colorado, his daughter Mary Elizabeth Boyer, his son-in-law Brian O’Boyle of Gaithersburg and his sister Dawn Boyer Porter and husband Ted of Davidsonville, MD.  He has many sisters and brother-in-law, wonderful nieces and nephews, beloved cousins and innumerable close friends.  He will be greatly missed.  Sonny was so very proud of his children.

A celebration of Sonny’s life will be held at 11 AM on Friday, February 7th at Darnestown Presbyterian Church, 15120 Turkey Foot Rd, Gaithersburg, MD followed by a graveside service.  A reception will follow.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Montgomery County Humane Society https://www.mchumane.org/ where Sonny adopted some of his best friends.

so that the family and other loved ones can see it.

I was a classmate at GHS and while I did not know Sonny well, he was always a nice guy to all of us. In the 60's, Darnestown and areas west of Gaithersburg seemed so far away from Laytonsville and the east side of the county, so I didn't really hang out over there! Our class as a whole was close and has been even closer in later years. My sympathy and prayers to Sonny's family.

I have many treasured memories from GHS days. We were all frightened for his well being when he had his hunting accident, and so happy to see him survive and thrive for many more years. I was very fortunate to fly a couple of times from the farm with him. I believe it was an Aeronca Champ. On one of the flights Sonny took us to Dulles Airport across the Potomac. He landed on what looked like a endless runway, then got permission from the tower to take off from the location of the first intersecting taxiway. We were at 1000 feet plus when we finally flew over the end of the runway we had just left. He was a kind friend that always greeted others with a smile. My condolences to all the family. I was fortunate to know Sonny and he will be missed.

I got to know Sonny in Miss Honsberger's Spanish class. We had lots of laughs, but it wasn't funny when his love of hunting landed him in Suburban Hospital. But even then when I visited, i saw he brought joy and laughs to the staff. Life took me away from Maryland, but I always loved seeing him again at reunions. He was one of the nicest people I have ever known.

When the journey is complete what better can be said than your beautiful spirit came shining through.

He took me on my first airplane ride. Took off and landed from his dad’s farm. Remember him always having to shoot the groundhogs off runway. Remember him shooting himself while going after the groundhogs. The good old day's for sure. Jay Germon live in Norfolk Virginia nowadays!!!

I only met Sonny on a handful of occasions many years ago but my memory of him was always that he was a nice, caring, friendly and warm soul. My thoughts and prayers to the whole Boyer family.
