Robert Duane Reid (Bob), 89, of Ellicott City, MD (formerly of Laurel, MD), passed away on May 21, 2025.
Bob was born to James Thomas Reed Jr. and Elsie Elizabeth McKinzie. He had six siblings and grew up in Washington, DC, later moving to Wheaton, MD. He attended Montgomery Blair High School in Tacoma Park, MD. Bob married his first wife, Greta Ilo Cook in 1954, who passed away suddenly in 1973. Bob married the second love of his life, Gloria Jean Piper, in 1974. Gloria passed away in 2003 after a battle with cancer.
Bob worked many years for Pepsi Cola and Schlitz Distributors. Bob and Gloria later went on to become proprietors of Travel Whirl of Maryland, a local small business travel agency.
Bob was active in many sports during his life, from playing football in high school to organized league softball and bowling. As the years passed, he opted for the less strenuous competition of golf, where he was a member of Indian Spring Country Club and Manor Country Club in Mongomery County, MD. His passion for sports was unmatched and often exhibited in his knowledge of the history of his favorite team, the Washington “Redskins”.
Bob is best remembered as a generous, caring and loving man, giving his time (and money) freely to those around him. It was said he could strike up and hold a conversation with anybody, which he often did. He loved his pets as family, none more so than his beloved Golden Retriever ‘Bailey’.
He is preceded in death by his parents and all siblings, and is survived by his children; Robert, Jr. (Crissy), David, Vicki Herlihy, and Bonnie (Mark) Corsi; eight grandchildren: Brennan, Justin, Katie (Loughlin), Eric, Kevin, Gregory (Corsi), Liam (Herlihy), Dominic (Corsi); and seven great-grandchildren: Kinsley, Stella, Everley, Oliver, Aidan, Elliot, and Isabelle; and many nephews, nieces, and friends.
The family will be receiving friends on Thursday, May 29, 2025, from 11:00 AM – 12:30 PM at Hilton Funeral Home, 22111 Beallsville Road, Barnesville, MD, followed by a Funeral Service at 12:30 PM. Interment to follow at Monocacy Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made in his memory to the following: ASPCA, Samaritan's Purse or Tunnel to Towers Foundation.
