Ann Shiflet (72) passed away peacefully in her sleep on June 23, 2025.
Born in 1953 to Philip and Catherine Winter, Ann grew up with her six siblings in Washington Grove, Maryland – a Town where her family had multi-generational roots.
As an adult, Ann often said that she felt very lucky to have grown up in the Grove with her large family. After meeting her husband Jim, Ann settled in a house of her own in the Grove – where she would raise two daughters, Kate and Sarah, within walking distance of many extended family members.
In addition to spending time with family, Ann enjoyed reading, puzzles, beadwork, and photography – whether at home in the Grove, or in the Outer Banks, where her family spent most summer vacations. She loved gift-giving and especially loved Christmas.
Ann began volunteering at the local elementary school where her daughters were students, and was eventually recruited by the principal to work part time. With her kind and patient demeanor, Ann fit right in as an instructional assistant, coaching students who needed extra help. She also demonstrated a knack for creating elaborate construction-paper displays for her teachers’ classrooms. When needed, she could summon a stern voice to control the lunchroom volume. Ann eventually retired from her work as a paraeducator due to a disabling chronic illness.
After husband Jim passed in 2024, Ann moved in with her daughter Kate and son-in-law Kevin. At her new home, Ann enjoyed hearing her grand-daughters laughter every day. She also enjoyed hearing stories from daughter Sarah, who called on a near-daily basis. Ann kept busy reading books and working on online puzzles.
Ann is survived by her children Kate (Kevin) and Sarah (Adam); her siblings, Peggy, Philip, Allen, Mike, and Warren; her grandchildren; multiple siblings in-law; and her many extended family members.
A celebration of life is being planned for a later date. Memorial donations may be made to the Lupus Foundation of America or a charity of your choice.
